Fertility issues

Currently, about twelve percent of couples in Israel have fertility issues and are unable to conceive on their own. Thus, they are forced to turn to outside help in order to solve this issue. The aforementioned assistance is publicly known as fertility treatments.

It is common to turn to fertility treatments after about a year of unsuccessful attempts to conceive. A fact to be aware of is that the chances of getting pregnant without assistance decreased over the years. Thus, most women who have reached the end of the third decade of their lives will have to resort to fertility treatments to get pregnant, even before the year of the trial to get pregnant normally.

Stages of treatment

First, a number of tests are performed to determine the source of the fertility problem. The male sperm is first examined to find out if the quality and quantity of the sperm is sufficient, as well as a hormonal test for the woman to assess ovarian function and detect ovulation problems.

Second, the attending physician will perform ultrasound tests to make sure there are no defects in the uterus or ovaries. Sometimes an evaluation of the function of the fallopian tubes is necessary and a hysteroscopy will be performed. During the X-ray of the uterus, a contrast material is injected into the uterus, and at the same time, an X-ray is performed to demonstrate the structure of the uterine cavity, the passage of the material in the fallopian tubes, and its distribution in the pelvic cavity.

At the end of testing, the appropriate treatment option will be decided. There are several options:

• Monitoring ovulation and insemination or sexual intercourse.
• Treatment with ikeklomin to encourage ovulation and intercourse or insemination.
• Treatment of ovarian stimulation injections to produce additional follicles combined with intercourse or insemination.
• In vitro fertilization treatments. It performs the action of combining sperm and eggs outside a woman's body.

Choosing a medical center

When searching for a fertility treatment center, there are two options: The first and cheapest option is to receive treatment at a public hospital. Treatment in this way is exposed to a large number of experts in the field, and not necessarily to the focus of a single physician. The main disadvantage involved in such treatment is the congestion and waiting that occurs in the hospitals and the lack of doctor’s accompaniment in coordinating the treatment of the couple.

The existing alternative to this is to turn to a private center. The great advantage that exists in contacting such a doctor, is a large number of working hours, a figure that may reduce the change of missing ovulation days. In addition, one doctor accompanies the patients throughout the process from beginning to end, and therefore his level of proficiency in the situation will be high. It should be added that most of the funding for private care is covered by the HMOs.
